suicides

I've been reading a lot in the press about entire families being snuffed out in murder-suicides. In one of them, apparently both parents- after losing their jobs- decided it was a better option to off their children and themselves. Things like this make me cock my head to the side and say, "Wait, what?"

Don't get me wrong, I know about stress and feeling like there's no light at the end of the tunnel. Thankfully I had the spring of 1993 to teach me differently. For those of you who weren't around for this era, it's pretty self-explanatory. Nana killed himself in the nastiest part of winter, on December 6, 1992. In his eyes, there was no way out. There was no better tomorrow. If had stuck around for another 3 or 4 months, things would have been different. Spring came, options presented themselves, and the world began to shift ever so slightly. If only he'd had the nuts to stick it out until spring, we could have watched the world transform, like it does every year.

The economy sucks. Jobs are hard to come by, and more people are getting laid off every day. Folks are losing their houses to foreclosure. Sometimes, it seems really, really bleak. But there's always a next spring, and a next spring after that one. All it takes is the choice to make due with less for now, the tenacity to look for help, and the humility to accept it when offered. And for the love of jebus, if you're so chicken shit that you decide to bow out, please don't take your munchkins with you. They still have a chance at a good life, and you have no right to take that from them.

On a completely unrelated note, can someone scrounge me a "Wait, what?" icon? I don't want to steal [livejournal.com profile] wiley_b's, but I also don't want one of a small, stoned feline (which is all I can seem to find in the innertubz).
